The End of the Series

The Little BIG Things video series at YouTube, comes to an end with this, the 80th video. It features Tom's favorite lesson from In Search of Excellence: Managing by Wandering Around. On the blog on, on 5 October 2004, Tom tells the story of Bob Waterman and him preparing to go on the Today show, and flipping a coin to decide which of them would mention this one of their eight basics. From observations at ("a much smaller, more intimate") Hewlett-Packard, they discovered this important management tool: get out and see (and be seen by) the people doing the work. In this last TLBT video, Tom relates how Starbucks' Howard Schultz religiously sticks to the practice.

Future Shape Survey 2012
Volunteers Wanted

When we surveyed business leaders and consultants from the Tom Peters network in 2010 using our Excellence Audit instrument, we wanted to get a sense of what people saw ahead for their organization and their work, and what changes they thought were most needed. There had already been two years of economic recession in many parts of the world at that time, and we wondered how this context was affecting peoples' perspectives on the world of work.

We found there was a strong opinion that looking back over their shoulders was the very opposite of what leaders should be doing at that time! Here's one typical comment from a U.S.-based Manufacturing Manager: "The biggest challenge we face is establishing a new benchmark for our efforts. It is important that we don't let the current malaise dictate our outlook."

We are repeating the survey again this year looking out for how leaders' attitudes may have shifted further. Can you help us, please?

A Manifesto for the New Rules on Human Capital

Posted yesterday: "A manifesto for the new rules on human capital." Tom wrote a column by this title for the Financial Times, and if you register at their site, you can get access through this link. In the article, Tom argues that the "changing nature of work—and the wildly accelerating effectiveness of technology"—is "both the number one problem and the number one opportunity for businesses and wider society."

In Part 19, which is the 12th "H" in the "15-H Theory of Everything," Tom pays tribute to small and middle-size businesses, with Hartville Hardware, one of the stars from George Whalin's book, Retail Superstars, as an example.

After the Party Was Over


Now that the first Olympic 2012 Party in London is over (Paralympics starts on 29th August), we Brits are all asking ourselves whether we are going to get the legacy we had hoped for. It seems to me that there is a great deal too much focus on whether we can anticipate any profits from our investment. Here are just a few examples of what I think we will gain from it:

1. Looking at the tangibles we are inheriting, we have paid a high price for the regeneration of the area where the new Olympic park was built, but a superb job has been done. A previously derelict and neglected area has been transformed with iconic venues, extensive parkland, and accommodation that will become 2,800 new homes for local people.

There is still debate about whether the athletics stadium will become a white elephant, as we are still arguing about who will take it over after the Games, but the velodrome and aquatic centre look likely to become fabulous resources for everyone to enjoy.
